The following information has been provided to assist others in planning their expected fuel consumption for the Canning Stock Route.
Note: The suggested average 4WD consumption using Google AI is between 18 and 25L/100 km (Not towing).
We allowed for an average consumption of 20L/100km for the longest stretch of 1050km between Kunawarritji (near Well 33) and Wiluna.
Route - Traveling South from Halls Creek to Wiluna via Well 5 through Granite Peak Station with very few detours. Total distance covered 1888km
Fuel Consumption – Diesel 328L (17.3L/100km or 5.76km/L)
Weather conditions – Dry and mid to high 30's ºC most days.
Track Condition – Sand Dunes with deep divots (mostly firm), extreme corrugations, sharp stony outcrops, rocky shelf sections, and hidden washouts.
Vehicle - Toyota LC70 4.5-litre V8 turbo-diesel engine (1VD-FTV) Manual Single Cab with Kappa Kamper.
Mass - 3850 kg (Fully loaded with water, fuel and jerry cans)
Fuel - From Halls Creek 130L Main Tank + 4 Jerry Cans 80L for a total of 210L
Water - 160L In tanks. (Used ~120L)
Tyre Pressures - 50% of normal road pressure provided traction over all dunes with no wheel spin.
Transmission - Dunes in 2nd and 3rd gear in High 4WD mode with the odd low-range dune crossing.
Recover Gear Used - None.
Paint Damage - None (Used Bushwrapz on vehicle and NarrowTrax on Canopy)
Punctures - None but 1 tyre suffered from tread damage from sharp outcrops.
DO NOT attemp the CSR without a high-wheel clearance 4WD with low range, good-quality tyres and suspension and in tip-top condition. Keep weight to a minimum and reduce tyre pressures to at least 50% of your normal road pressures. Take supplies for at least 3 weeks. On the CSR, you will see the remains of ill-prepared vehicles and trailers, and each year more, the number increases.
